Facebook – other lists to use.

We covered the restricted list yesterday so let’s look at other lists’
Facebook also has inbuilt lists for:

Close Friends: You can add your best friends to this list to see more of them in your news feed and get notified each time they post. You also have the option to turn these extra notifications off.
Acquaintances: This list is for friends you don’t need to stay in close touch with. People on your acquaintances list will rarely show up in your news feed. You can also choose to exclude these people when you post something, by choosing Friends except Acquaintances in the audience selector. Note: Your friends won’t get notified when you add them to these lists.

You can also make your own lists, called custom lists, to organize friends as you like. You choose who goes into these lists and what (if any) privacy restrictions apply. Note that your friends won’t get notified when you add them to custom lists.
I use this myself by having a list of friends I know through digital scrapbooking that I don’t want to bombard with my personal stuff.  If I am posting something relevant to them I can include them in the audience for the post. Personal posts I can make to friends except scrapbooking.

You can also edit your lists or create custom lists right from your home page:

  1. Click the Home link (along the top-right of every Facebook page)
  2. Find the list you want to edit in the left column, or click the More link next to Friends
  3. Select the list you want to edit or click Create a List
  4. Search for your friends in the search bar at the top of the page, or add people from the List Suggestions on the right

Facebook tips – Restricted ????

Did you know you can put people on a restricted list ?
When you add someone to your Restricted list, they will only be able to see your Public content or posts of yours that you tag them in.
So if you put your boss on your Restricted list, post a photo and choose Friends as the audience, your boss (and anyone else on Restricted) won’t see that photo.
However, if you add a tag of your boss to the photo, Facebook let them know they’re in it. If someone else tries to tag your boss in one of your photos, you’ll get to approve this tag from your pending posts.

This can be very useful as you don’t need to set exclusions on every post. You may want to accept a friend request but limit what the person sees.

How to do it ?

When you accept the friend request you can put them into the restricted group.

You can add individual friends to lists by hovering over the Friends button at the top of their profile (timeline) and selecting from the list names that appear. If you don’t see the name of the list you’re looking for, click the option to show all of your lists.

If you wnat o organise all your friends just go to your timeline, click on the friends box up the top.

This will open all your friends. Just hover over their name, then on the ‘friends’ and you can see what group you have them in and change any settings.

More later. Any questions feel free to ask and I will see if I can answer.

Who can see what on your Facebook page

For those of you who use Facebook it can often be a nightmare keeping up with privacy and making sure people only see what you want. I am often surprised at what pops up in my updates or what I can see on some pages where people say they only share some information but you can see lots and lots.
Remember if your settings aren’t right and your friends settings aren’t right your posts will be visible exponentially. That adds up to a lot of people knowing what you do and often where you are.
It can be a bit of a hunt to find how to secure your privacy but there are some things that are easy so I thought I would do up some tutorials for you to make it simple.

First – Let’s have a look at what the public can see on your timeline. You should check this regularly in case you miss a post or something screws up.

On your timeline right next to Activity Log you will see a little arrow – click on this and then choose view as.

On the next screen you will see

This is how your timeline looks to the public.

Use this tool to see how your timeline appears to a specific friend or the public. Remember: you can always change who can see any post that appears on your timeline.
Type in any of your friends names in the box and you can see your timeline as it appears to them.

Simple isn’t it ?
You will have to go back to your timeline to change the privacy on any posts that you want to amend.
I will be back with more tomorrow.
